I was going to argue Wall-E getting in over Johnny 5 or Evil Bill and Ted, but I love your comment about how Johnny 5 opened things up for a character like Wall-E in the future. He may be the first sympathetic major robot character in movies. Before that robots were evil, or dangerous, or total sidekicks. The only robot who may predate Johnny 5 in that role is R2D2.

    Another great list Heather….you rock!!!!

Good list though I would have removed Data. I associate him more with television than film.

I definitely would have liked to have seen RoboCop make the top ten or even the T-1000.

Yeah, I totally expected to see both the T-1000 and Wall-E on here, but I like how you didn’t go with just the expected choices. Well done. I looooooove that Evil Bill and Evil Ted made the list. Bogus Journey is grossly underrated, and it’s always nice to see it get some love.

It’s also nice to see NO Transformers on here, as that movie was one of the most overrated pieces of shit I’ve ever seen, unless you have Transformers from the 1985 film. Then I would say that Hot Rod should have made the list.

Meanwhile, I do think a few others deserve consideration like Dot Matrix (Spaceballs), Maria (Metropolis), Tima (Metropolis, 2001), and Rocky’s butler (Rocky IV).

And, as always, Star Wars should be higher.

    Moviejunkie,

I think it was Data’s role in the motion picture that made The Next Generation successful as a feature film. What he contributed added layers of complexity and character evolution from a show that had been around for years. I just loved that change from what had been so cemented in him at that point.

    Lizard King,

I know your thoughts on Transformers along with Marc’s wherever he’s been, BUT I did think they deserved an honorable mention. I enjoyed them in every superficial way they were meant to be enjoyed.

But thanks for the comments. I can never argue with someone claiming Star Wars should be higher. ;)

Short Circuit actually made me cry when I was younger. I love that movie and really need to get out there and find it.

That’s a good list of both good and bad robots. I always think of robots as being bad because the ones that are good are always so believable as human I tend to forget they’re even robots at all.

I like what you have going on here. Keep up the good work!

  8. Jo Jo says:

    Good List.

Wall-E should have made it though, instead of #5.

  9. Marc says:

Reading this now made me realize Roy Batty should have been in best death scenes….

That aside, good list, but honoring Iron Giant while including evil Bill and Ted? Does not compute.

No way ‘Whoa’ beats ‘……Superman…….’ – and you know what – another one missing from best deaths right there…..damn it….something in my eye….

    Marc

  10. Morbius says:

Any list of top movie robots that doesn’t include (or even honorably mention) Robby the Robot from “Forbidden Planet” is laughable.

  11. Star Wars is #1. Sorry!
I like seeing Johnny 5 up there. And I LOVE Bishop. He’s the good robot!
