Are you ready for some bad ass plants in 3D? Don Murphy, producer of ‘Transformers’ and Michael Preger, ‘Village of the Damned’, are teaming to produce a 3D film adaptation of John Wyndham’s classic sci-fi novel “The Day of the Triffids”. This is not the first time that this story has been adapted. The first time was in 1962 and for British television in 1981. Preger also produced a 2009 British TV mini-series version of ‘Triffids’ which starred Dougray Scott, Eddie Izzard and Vanessa Redgrave.
According to the description of the novel on Wikipedia. Triffids are aggressive and seemingly intelligent plants that are able to move about on their three “legs”, appear to communicate with each other and possess a deadly whip-like poisonous sting that enables them to kill and feed on the rotting carcasses of their victims. mankind suffers a global crisis due to plants capable of aggressive behavior, leading to an unprecedented cosmic event causing global blindness.
I have yet to read the book or see any of the previous film or television adaptations, but this story seems like it can benefit from the recent advances in technology and that is the plan for the new 3D version. That is exactly what the producers feel too. “We are confident that with the new technological advances in 3D production, we have the tools with which to create Wyndham’s iconic vision of Armageddon,” Preger said.
