Christopher Nolan announced that the name of the third Batman film will be The Dark Knight Rises. In a recent interview with Hero Complex, Nolan also squashed a rumor that The Riddler would be the villain.
Nolan also stated that,
“We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.”
He went on to confirm that The Dark Knight Rises will NOT be shot in 3D. That sound you are hearing right now is myself and millions of fans letting out a huge sigh of relief. Even though I was hoping that The Riddler would be in the next film and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would specifically be playing that role I trust fully in Christopher Nolan’s vision and direction.
So let the speculation begin. Since The Riddler will not make an appearance who do you think will? What are your thoughts of this announcement?

I consider this another testament to the fact that just because a rumor is in print doesn’t make it any more true. I’m kind of glad it’s not The Riddler. It seemed to me everyone kept wanting to make The Riddler a substitute for The Joker, and if the difference between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight has taught us anything it’s that Nolan is not interested in repeating himself (except for the whole destroying Gotham motif, but that’s a given).
Personally I’m championing Ramon Sionis (aka Black Mask) as the new villain. His theology fits well with what Nolan seems to be aiming for with these films, and his got a rich back story.

I’m not crazy about the title, but I am glad that it will not be shot in 3-D. I think Black Mask is a good guess for the villain, although I could see Hush or The Ventriloquist being considered as well.
The main thing is that it’s not 3D thankfully. I personally will be happy with any villain.

Catwoman has been done to death, and Nolan has kind of put himself in a tight spot in that the world he’s made is too real for a fat dude with an umbrella to be a credible and threatening villain and for guys like Killer Croc to be believable. While Oswald Cobblepot could be manipulated and re-made to fit into Nolan’s Bat-world, I actually think that Riddler would have been the best fit for Nolan’s Gotham and also for Nolan’s sensibilities and talents as a filmmaker.
Missed opportunity, if you ask me. In the meantime, we have a title. Yay.

I think everyone is excited that it is not in 3D (hear that Mr. Scorsese?)….Levitt would have made an awesome Riddler. Will be interesting to see what this one brings…
First of all, it;s clear two-face will enter the picture. As seen in TDK. So now that the Riddler is out, as well as Harly (no Joker = no Harly)I’m hoping for an evil character. I hope it’s not the Penguin or Catwoman. I hope we will get Mr. Freeze. I would also like to see the Manbat or Bane. And clayface would also be great
