Review
Edward Scissorhands becomes another vessel for Tim Burton to explore his own delectable style and light hearted drama’s. You are either a fan or you aren’t. There is no real in between. If ever a producer and director lived and created in his own worlds, Tim Burton is that man. He has no boundaries for conception or visuals and only the consistency of making movies that becoming appealing visually and conceptually.
In a perfect little neighborhood where everything is almost sinister it is so cookie cooker, an imperfect man from an imperfect house comes to bright new town. Edward, in his monstrous appearance begs the earnest attention of those who surround him, that quickly find uses for his oddities and attempt to conform him. It isn’t long before the once adored Edward has become the town enemy. Just as quickly as they put him on a pedestal, they knocked him down for being different. Not unlike the way Hollywood treats it’s society, or the way Burton himself has been shunned as an outsider.

By the end, the story clearly shows Edward as a gentle, kind hearted soul who doesn’t know how to connect with the rest of the world even though he desperately wants to, and what person can’t relate that sentiment? His relationship with the stereotypical cheerleader who supposedly has everything on the outside is clearly just as miserable on the inside as Edward. Their intimate relationship and different kind of love is heartbreaking as neither can comfort one another they way they want to. It is truly the greatest unconsummated love ever on film.
Johnny Depp was finally recognized by the Academy for his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean, but I believe his role as Edward was much more poignant of his acting ability. He barely speaks throughout the film, but is subtle in his expressions rather than compensating for his lack of dialogue. Without question Depp is one of the most gifted actors alive right now, but I doubt even Burton knew the chemistry he and Ryder would have as Edward and Kim. Both are profound actors, but what made this movie really work was the implied relationship that developed between Edward and Kim. The small moments and glances were so intimate and wistful.
It's 1990, didn't someone tell these suburanites that Flock Of Seagulls is out?
Edward Scissorhands is my favorite of Tim Burton’s movies. Anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider, or ever felt alone can probably relate to Edward. What Tim Burton really showed was what it would be like to feel alone in a room full of crowded people, or worse, isolated from the people you love. It’s incredibly palpable. Visually and emotionally, this is Burton’s best piece of work. An off kilter fantasy set in a melancholy modern world, Edward teaches us all a lesson or two.
There is nothing better than a Johnny Depp and Tim Burton film!
While I’m not a huge fan of Tim Burton’s I can’t help but watch this movie every winter. Despite starring Johnny Depp as a man with scissors for hands and a general freakish look, there’s something absolutely charming about this movie. In fact, I’ll totally own up to the fact that 9 times of out 10, I’ll end up crying.
It’s that moment in the snow! It’s so beautiful and melancholy. As fantastical as the film is, it touches such raw and real emotions. One of my favorites ever.
