Gore Verbinski is is officially directing The Lone Ranger. Earlier this year it was reported that Verbinski, director of Pirates of the Caribbean, might end up directing the big screen adaptation for Disney and today it has been officially announced.
Johnny Depp has already been cast as the Lone Ranger’s sidekick Tonto. A start date for production is not known at this time or more importantly who will play the role of the Lone Ranger. It is likely that casting news will be made available shortly.
The story of The Lone Ranger got it’s origins from a group of Texas Rangers chasing down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.
Verbinski and Depp have a good history working together so this sounds like a project I am looking forward to seeing. What do you think of this news and who should play The Lone Ranger?
